The 2006 population in the North Eastern Metropolitan geographic region was 1.27 million and the total metropolitan Melbourne population was 3.74 million. Between 2006 and 2016, the Northern Health catchment area is forecast to have the highest level of population growth (10%), followed by Austin Health (8%), Eastern Health (4%) and Mercy Hospital for Women (3.3%). Health Services within NEMICS
NEMICS participating health services provide services for people from a number of local government areas (LGAs) across metropolitan and rural Victoria. Based on the 2004/2005 hospital data, the main sources of patients are:
- people residing within principal LGAs in the geographic North Eastern Metropolitan region (Banyule, Boroondara, Darebin, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Nillumbik, Whitehorse, Whittlesea, Yarra Ranges).
- people attending from other LGAs such as Brimbank, Hume, Latrobe, Mitchell, Monash, Moreland, Murrindindi, Stonnington
- people from interstate, overseas and unknown (Mercy Hospital for Women)
Over the period 2001/03 (updated data will be available this year), the highest numbers of cancer incident cases (the number of new cases for registrable cancers), within the Melbourne metropolitan area, were in:
- Boroondara and Monash (6.2% each of the metropolitan incidence of cancer)
- Whitehorse (5.8%)
- Mornington Peninsula (5.2%)
- Knox (4.6%)
- Kingston (4.3%)
- Manningham (4.3%)
- Yarra Ranges (4.1%)
- Glen Eira (4.1%)
The highest incidence of cancer was due to:
- Genito-urinary (19.1%)
- Colorectal (15%)
- Breast (13.9%)
- Lung (9.6%)
- Haematological malignancies (9.4%)
The main types of cancer overall, within the NEMICS catchment area, were prostate cancer (17% of incident cases), breast cancer (17%), cancer of the colon/rectum (15%), melanoma (14%) and lung (11%). |
